Rocket Science!

As part of Discovery Time Room 1A have been working on following instructions. testing out theories and asking questions to find out more. As we are learning about 'Flight' for Inquiry we thought that making some 'Balloon Rockets' would be a great way to practice these skills. Before we got started we wrote down what we thought might happen if we put large or small amounts of air into the balloon and why we thought this. We also talked about how changing the direction of the balloon's neck would change the way it moved. Next we followed instructions to build our balloon rockets so we could test out whether what we thought was right. We had a lot of fun and Mrs Pupuke was very impressed with how we worked together to build our rockets. We discovered that the air moving out of a balloon pushes it in the opposite direction. We thought that putting a large amount of air in the balloon would mean it would move further and more quickly and we were right! Later in the week we discovered that the scientific name for the movement made by the air moving out of the balloon is called 'Thrust'. If you want to try this out for yourself at home here are some instructions:

Morepork

Morepork
When I touched the morepork it felt ticklish. It had white spots on the mighty morepork. The morepork eats spiders and other big animals like mice. The morepork is brown. The beak is like Sunshine and Snowy’s beak. Its beak is like a triangle spoon to catch big big animals so the morepork doesn't starve to death. It must have slammed into the window.

By Aidan

The Morepork
Today in class we saw a morepork, it had big black wings. It had wonderful white spots. I got to touch the morepork. Nearly all of the people in my class wanted to pat him. I was the first person to pat him because I was at the front of the line. I was whakamā, but when I touch it he was soft. His heart had broken.
By Alesana

The Morepork
Today the morepork was dead because he fell down late last night. He was next to Rachel’s house. On the morning Rachel found the morepork . The class likes morepork.

The Dead Morepork
Last night a ruru died. It looked cute. It looked like Sunshine and Snowy. It was spotty. It was black, it had white spots on its wings. Its tail and wings were like a fan. I was so sad because it died. It was bigger than a canary and it was a native morepork. It had sharp claws.
By Aubrey

Today I saw a magnificent ruru. Haidee held the ruru. Then most of the champion class got to touch it. Then we had to wash our hands. The ruru is pretty and beautiful and very spotty, and lucky last, cute! Oh, wait and its dead. And awesome!
By Courtney

Morepork
Today after morning tea time Haidee brought a magnificent surprise. It was a dead bird, but not any bird it was a New Zealand native bird the marvelous Morepork. I was so surprised. It was stripy and spotty. There were black and white patterns on it. Do you know it was brownie white and a little bit black. When you spread its fluffy feathers it is beautiful. It has a tail that is like a feathery fan. It is actually really sad that it died. We have to look after them so they don’t become extinct. I got a bit whakamā (shy).I got to feel it. It was softer than a cat. Their beaks have a curve on the end to catch their prey. So that is about the morepork that I saw.
By Eden

Morepork
Today we saw a morepork and it is very cute and soft. Its beak is sharp. It has sharp claws. Moreporks eat spiders and insect and mice.

The Beaky Morepork
I was holding a morepork. I was a little bit whakamā. I was really shocked as well. It was feathery too. Then we all had to wash our hands. We had to describe the morepork and write a description as well. I was sad because it died. But it is in a better place now.

The Money Morepork
Today at school Haidee our teacher showed us a morepork. It had big talons to grab prey. But sadly it was dead. It was tiny. I’m sad the magnificent magic morepork is dead. The marvellous morepork is spotted all over. The morepork is a native bird only found in New Zealand. Its colours are brown, black and white. It has a little beak. The beak is silvery grey. His beak is beautiful. Its tail is like a fan and his wing feathers are like a spread out big fan. After touching the morepork I washed my hands with soap.
By Rhys

The Morepork Day

The tail was soft too. I saw the legs and the sharp yellow beak. It eats white tails that are poisonous spiders. The eyes were closed like it was asleep but it wasn't asleep it was dead.

Room 3 Making Lemonade Recount and Instructions

Yummy Sweet Lemonade

Guess what? Room 3 made some delicious lemonade on Friday at Discovery Time. Lots of people brought lemons to make the lemonade. The lemons came from Ben's lemon tree and Lily's Nanna's lemon tree and Tyler got his 20 lemons from his Auntie's house. Ngatai also brought a big bag of lemons to share.  Miss Gunston put all the children in groups of 4. Each group took it in turns to follow the instructions to make the lemonade. The first group spilled their lemon juice all over the table so they had to start again. One group accidentally put hot water in their lemonade so they made hot lemonade! Miss Gunston told us to drink our lemonade outside just in case we made a mess. Room 1A's Big Sleep In Assembly

It has been a very exciting week for Room 1A: on Friday we hosted our first assembly... in our jammies! We  worked hard practicing our lines and song with our buddy class Room 14 all week. Then on Friday morning it was time to share our learning (And a few laughs) with the rest of the school and our friends and whanau. We did an amazing job and Mrs Pupuke was very proud. Some of us were so excited about wearing our pyjamas that we stayed in them all day, we got some pretty funny looks in the playground!

Paremata School's Speedy Cross Country   By Room 3

On Wednesday the cross country was postponed, but on Thursday the 22nd of May, our excited class walked out to the field to watch the school cross country. "Go, go, go" shouted the crowd as the people raced around the course.

Then it was our turn.  Theresa said "Are you ready to race?" We followed her to the middle of the field.  We were warming up. We jogged on the spot, kicked our bottoms, did star jumps and the hokey pokey dance to warm our bodies up. Then the year two boys raced. The blocks banged, the crowd went wild and we took off and sped along the track. Ryder had a little boost of energy and beat Ngatai. Tyler overtook Ryder and Ollie said "In the race my tummy felt strange".  Carter won the race. Ollie came second and Ben came third.  Room 3 had all the place winners.

Ben, Carter, Ollie
Anya, Ella

Year two girls went next and Carter's sister, Anya, came first. Alesana came second and Eden and Ella came third equal. Lots of people were huffing and puffing. Anya said "When I was running I couldn't breathe very well". Chloe got the stitch, but she kept persevering.

We can't wait until next year's cross country. What a lot to tell our parents when we head home at 3 o'clock.

Making Noodles In Room 3

Making Noodles

by Paige and Anya

On Friday at Discovery time we made noodles. We needed eggs, water, flour and a frying pan with boiling water.  The first group had to make the dough.  Then we spread the dough out with a rolling pin and we cut it into really thin pieces.  We cut down the long side of the dough. Then when we were finished cutting the pieces we queued up to cook the noodles. They tasted delicious.
